Fest der Europäischen Dorferneuerung: | Celebration of European Village Renewal: “All different. All together.”
19. European Village Renewal Award (EV!RA) in Kostelní Lhota, Tschechische Republik, verliehen
Unter dem Motto „All different. All together“ wurde der EV!RA 2026 – in seiner bereits 19. Auflage seit 1990 – von der Europäischen ARGE Landentwicklung und Dorferneuerung ausgelobt und durchgeführt. Vorigen Freitag wurden die Preise feierlich verliehen. Rund 600 Menschen aus rund 30 europäischen Ländern und Regionen, unter ihnen zahlreiche ranghohe Politiker:innen sowie Vertreter:innen aus Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft und Diplomatie aus ganz Europa, wohnten der Preisverleihung in der mittelböhmischen Gemeinde Kostelní Lhota bei, die den Bewerb 2024 für sich entscheiden konnte.
Der stimmungsvolle Festakt mit der Übergabe der Preise an die 25 Teilnehmer des Wettbewerbs 2026, allen voran an den interkommunalen Verbund Valposchiavo (Graubünden, Schweiz) als Gesamtsieger, war in ein dreitägiges Fest der europäischen Begegnung eingebunden. Von Donnerstag bis Samstag erwartete die Gäste ein höchst abwechslungsreiches Programm mit Exkursionen, Workshops, Dorfspaziergängen und kulturellen Darbietungen. Sowohl Gastgeber als auch Teilnehmer hatten Gelegenheit, ihren Ort, ihre Gemeinde oder Region zu präsentieren, Know-how und Erfahrungen auszutauschen sowie regions- und grenzüberschreitende Kontakte aufzubauen und Netzwerke zu knüpfen.
„Der European Village Renewal Award ist mehr als ein Wettbewerb, er ist eine europäische Ideenbörse für die Zukunft unserer ländlichen Räume. Das, was hier an Lösungskompetenz geboten wird, ist Inspiration und Vorbild für unzählige Dörfer, Gemeinden und Regionen. All das Wissen und die Erfahrungen zu sammeln, aufzubereiten und für andere nutzbar zu machen, ist eine der Hauptaufgaben unserer ARGE und die eigentliche Intention des EV!RA“, betonte Niederösterreichs Landeshauptfrau Johanna Mikl-Leitner, die von der Vollversammlung eben erst für weitere vier Jahre als Vorsitzende der Europäischen ARGE Landentwicklung und Dorferneuerung wiedergewählt worden war. Ländliche Räume seien keine Problemzonen, sondern Zukunftsräume, die sich oft auch als Vorreiter im Finden von Antworten auf die großen Fragen unserer Zeit erweisen.
Ihre Amtskollegin aus Mittelböhmen, Kreishauptfrau Petrá Peckova, unterstrich, dass die Zukunft der ländlichen Räume nicht allein auf Investitionen, sondern vor allem auf engagierten Menschen, auf Zusammenarbeit und auf dem Mut zu Innovationen beruhe, wenn es etwa darum gehe, auf die rasanten Veränderungen der Gegenwart, etwa auf klimatische Herausforderungen, den demografischen Wandel oder die Digitalisierung, adäquat zu reagieren.
Gesamtsieg für interkommunalen Verbund Valposchiavo in der Schweiz
Multimedia-Präsentationen, die die Teilnehmerorte vorstellten und Einblicke in den Wettbewerb boten, erwiesen sich nicht nur als stimmungsvolle Einlagen, sondern verdeutlichten auch, welch herausfordernder Aufgabe sich die 20-köpfige internationale Jury unter dem Vorsitz von Nadja Häupl, Städtebau-Professorin an der Uni Anhalt in Dessau, gegenübersah, aus den 25 Top-Bewerbern die Preisträger zu küren – kein leichtes Unterfangen angesichts der außerordentlich hohen Qualität aller eingereichten Projekte und Entwicklungsprozesse. Am meisten konnte schließlich der interkommunale Verbund Valposchiavo im Schweizer Kanton Graubünden überzeugen und sich den Gesamtsieg sichern. Beeindruckt zeigte sich die Jury hier vor allem vom Leitprojekt „100% Valposchiavo“, das auf regionale Wertschöpfung, nachhaltige Landwirtschaft und starke lokale Kreisläufe setzt, dabei Tradition mit Innovation verbindet und dank eines durchgehend inklusiven und integrativen Ansatzes die Bedürfnisse aller Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner berücksichtigt.
Premiere: EV!RA LaureateMit der Auszeichnung „EV!RA Laureate“ hat die Europäische ARGE Landentwicklung und Dorferneuerung 2026 schließlich einen neuen Akzent gesetzt und die Möglichkeit geschaffen, ergänzend zu den EV!RAs an Dörfer, Gemeinden und interkommunale Verbunde auch Persönlichkeiten zu würdigen, die sich um die Zukunft der ländlichen Räume Europas besonders verdient gemacht haben. Als erste Preisträgerin wurde Theres Friewald-Hofbauer erkoren, die über Jahrzehnte eine zentrale Rolle in der ARGE einnahm und alle 19 Wettbewerbsrunden entscheidend mitprägte.
19th European Village Renewal Award (EV!RA) presented in Kostelní Lhota, Czech Republic
Under the motto “All different. All together.”, the European Association for Rural Development and Village Renewal (ARGE) organised the 2026 edition of EV!RA – the 19th European Village Renewal Award since the competition was launched in 1990. The awards were presented at a festive ceremony last Friday. Around 600 people from approximately 30 European countries and regions attended the ceremony in the Central Bohemian municipality of Kostelní Lhota, winner of the 2024 competition. Among them were numerous high-ranking politicians as well as representatives from civil society, business and the diplomatic community from across Europe.
The atmospheric ceremony, during which awards were presented to the 25 participants in the 2026 competition – first and foremost to the intermunicipal alliance Valposchiavo (Graubünden, Switzerland) as the overall winner – formed part of a three-day celebration of European encounters. From Thursday to Saturday, guests enjoyed an exceptionally varied programme of excursions, workshops, village walks and cultural performances. Both the host municipality and the participants had the opportunity to showcase their village, municipality or region, exchange expertise and experience, establish contacts across regional and national borders, and build new networks.
“The European Village Renewal Award is more than a competition; it is a European marketplace of ideas for the future of our rural areas. The problem-solving expertise presented here provides inspiration and serves as a model for countless villages, municipalities and regions. Collecting this knowledge and experience, processing it and making it available to others is one of our Association’s principal responsibilities and the true purpose of EV!RA,” emphasised Johanna Mikl-Leitner, Governor of Lower Austria, who had just been re-elected by the General Assembly as Chair of the European Association for Rural Development and Village Renewal for a further four-year term. Rural areas, she said, were not problem areas but places of opportunity and promise, often leading the way in finding answers to the major questions of our time.
Her Central Bohemian counterpart, Governor Petra Pecková, emphasised that the future of rural areas depended not only on investment, but above all on committed people, cooperation and the courage to innovate – particularly when it came to responding appropriately to the rapid changes of our time, including climate-related challenges, demographic change and digitalisation.
Overall victory for Switzerland’s intermunicipal alliance Valposchiavo
Multimedia presentations introducing the participating communities and offering insights into the competition not only provided atmospheric interludes but also illustrated the challenging task faced by the 20-member international jury, chaired by Nadja Häupl, Professor of Urban Planning at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Dessau. Selecting the award winners from among 25 outstanding candidates was no easy undertaking, given the exceptionally high quality of all the projects and development processes submitted.
Ultimately, the intermunicipal alliance Valposchiavo in the Swiss canton of Graubünden made the strongest impression and secured the overall victory. The jury was particularly impressed by the flagship project “100% Valposchiavo”, which promotes regional value creation, sustainable agriculture and strong local economic cycles. The project combines tradition with innovation and, through its consistently inclusive and integrative approach, takes account of the needs of all residents.
A first: EV!RA Laureate
By introducing the distinction “EV!RA Laureate” in 2026, the European Association for Rural Development and Village Renewal (ARGE) has set a new accent and created an opportunity to honour not only villages, municipalities and intermunicipal alliances with EV!RA awards, but also individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the future of Europe’s rural areas. The first person to receive the distinction was Theres Friewald-Hofbauer, who played a central role in the ARGE for decades and was instrumental in shaping all 19 editions of the competition.
